What Is Import Export Code?

An import export code, or IEC, is an important company identification number basically required for import or export products and services in India. A 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade is necessary for conducting any sort of cross-border trade activity. A number of paper works are required to get this IEC by following certain legal requirements.
In addition to allowing for smooth international transactions, an IEC offers several government schemes and benefits that promote international trade.

Frequently Asked Questions

An Import Export Code (IEC) is a unique 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to businesses involved in importing or exporting goods and services from India. It is mandatory for any business that wants to engage in international trade. The IEC helps in tracking and regulating trade activities and is required for customs clearance, availing benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy, and for banking transactions related to imports and exports.

Any business entity involved in importing or exporting goods and services from India needs to obtain an IEC. This includes proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs, limited companies, trusts, HUFs, and societies. Even service providers who are availing benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy need to obtain an IEC.

To apply for an IEC, a business needs to follow these steps:

  1. Visit the DGFT website (www.dgft.gov.in).
  2. Click on the ‘Services’ tab and select ‘IEC Profile Management’.
  3. Click on ‘Apply for IEC’ and register by providing the required details.
  4. Verify the OTP sent to the registered mobile number.
  5. Fill in the application form with necessary details such as PAN, bank account information, and address.
  6. Upload the required documents, including the Digital Signature Certificate (DSC).
  7. Make the payment for the application fee.
  8. Submit the application and download the receipt for future reference

Having an IEC allows businesses to:

  • Legally engage in import and export activities.
  • Avail benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy, such as duty drawbacks and export incentives.
  • Facilitate customs clearance and smooth handling of shipments.
  • Access international markets and expand business operations globally.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and avoid penalties.

An IEC is valid for a lifetime and does not require renewal. However, businesses need to ensure that their IEC details are up-to-date and accurate. If there are any changes in business details, the IEC profile should be updated accordingly
